Rainier tour or drive yourself?

This is the question that decides your Rainier day, and the answer depends mostly on two things: how many of you there are, and whether you already have a car. Here is the honest math.

What a tour costs

The guided day tours from Seattle run from about $148 per person (small group, maximum 12) to $175 (the Highlights Tour, plus a $20 per-person gratuity Viator adds at checkout) and $344 for the all-inclusive day with lunch and a naturalist guide. What driving costs

• Park pass: $30 per car, valid 7 days (or an America the Beautiful pass).
• Car: a day’s rental typically runs $60 to $100 in Seattle, more in peak summer.
• Gas: about 220 miles (355 km) round trip, roughly $30 to $45.
• Parking: free at Paradise, if you find a space.

So is a tour worth it?

Take a tour if you are traveling solo without a car, you arrived on a cruise, or nobody wants to drive five hours of highway and mountain road. You also skip the parking hunt at Paradise and get a guide who knows the park, which is the thing reviewers praise most. Drive yourself if there are two or more of you, you already have a car, or you want a long hike or sunset light. A $15 GPS audio guide app adds commentary to a self-drive day.
